Research Area:Information Retrieval and Natural Language Processing
Research experience:Prof.Zainab Abu Bakar research experience spawned when pursuing PhD career in Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia under the esteemed supervision of Prof Emeritus Dr Tengku Mohd Tengku Sembok. research area is focused on text retrieval. Later the research area is expanded to Spoken Document Retrieval (SDR), Geographical Information Retrieval (GIR), Mathematical Information Retrieval (MIR), Genomic Information Retrieval, and Multimedia Information Retrieval (Image, Video and Audio). These works can be found in many publications besides being cornerstones of many undergraduate and postgraduate projects. Some of the projects, if not all, have won medals both at home as well as the international arena.
Traditional keyword search that has been applied in the above works has expanded to semantic search that seeks to improve search accuracy by understanding user information need and the contextual meaning of terms. Semantic search systems consider various points including context of search, location, intent, word variation, synonyms, generalised queries, concept matching, ontology, creation of domain specific and natural language queries.
This has lead us to align our research with the Natural Language Processing– Part of Speech Tagging, Topic Extraction and summarization, Spoken Word Segmentation and Recognition, Lexicon Construction, Grammatical Analysis for the Malay language.
